Week 6

Sat Sri Akal,
Last week Room 13 learned different ways to solve addition problems. We would like to share these ways with you.

First way was by counting on from a given number. Here is an example

I have 14 apples and my sister gives me another 5 apples. How many apples do I have altogether?

First I put 14 which is the biggest number in my mind and then I count on 5 more. So if 14 is in my mind , I count another 5 more which is 15, 16, 17, 18 , 19 . So the answer is 19 apples.

Another way is by making a ten first and then adding the rest. Here is an example.

Fatima had 8 apples and her father gives her another 7 apples . How many apples does Fatima have?

I know that 8 + 2 makes 10 using my basic facts knowledge of bonds to ten. I will take 2 from the 7 and add to the 8 to make 10. What is left behind is 5. So I add 10 + 5 is 15. The answer to 8 + 7 = 15.

8 +7 = 15

(8 + 2) + 5 = 10 + 5
                    = 15

The third way we learned how to add is using the place value . Here is an example:

I had 23 apples and my sister gave me another 24 apples. How many apples do I have altogether?

The number sentence would be

23 + 24

Here I know that 3 ones plus 4 ones are 7 ones. 2 tens plus 2 tens are 4 tens4 tens and 7 ones are called forty seven and the symbol to that is 47. So the answer to 23 + 24 is 47. I can write it another way that is
          T     O
          2      3
          2      4
         4       7
